I kind of like the idea of a diversity of tasks. In sailplanes, the idea behind the LSF is to promote proficiency in several different disciplines. Thus there are tasks for Cross Country, Slope, etc. in addition to Thermal Duration. They require different models and different flying skills. Sure, there will always be specialists who don't compete in any of the other disciplines, but I don't think we're seeking to create specialists?
