Ok, I should have said that it is usually less of an indication of preparation and ability - except when there is a very distinct advantage, like your prop or Sanborn's hyper-model.
In Snowboard Cross, the best guy wins sometimes, too, but much more often than in the other events you get a guy from nowhere in a top spot. Take a look at the LPP records and you see the same thing.
