Yes, pull is needed. Measure the OD of the motor stick. Set the micrometer for that and use the distance to mark tick marks on the stick on the bottom. Start at one end and wrap to end on the tick mark. Glue down every one or two turns. Then use a minimum amount of glue to stick the fibers down along the length. Some small amount of tension is good - I do it by hand though.

Hope this is enough to do it.
