Re: Rubber o-ring size for A2Z glue bottles?

A2Z has used two type of washers in their bottles. At first, and it appears currently, they used O-rings. They are of a standard size, (AS-568) 110 (3/8" ID, 9/16" OD, 3/32" section diameter). As LeRoy said, there has also been flat washers supplied rather than the O-rings. The dimensions on the flat washers I have are similar to the numbers LeRoy gave: 9/16" OD, 5/32" ID, 0.100" thick.

The problem with both the O-rings and flat washers is the material. Both, I think, are made of buna N (and maybe neoprene for some flat washers). This rubber is not good for the solvents we use like acetone and heptane/naphtha (for dissolving the 3M77 we use for covering adhesive). These solvents breakdown buna N (and neoprene). The flat washers provide more sealing surface but both let solvents evaporate through the rubber. The LDPE (and, for some bottles, the polypropylene) also allows the solvents to pass through. I wish the bottles would come in HDPE (but these would be stiffer, a problem for some). For my traveling kit, I make Teflon washers for the bottles out of 0.010" thick sheet stock but the solvents still evaporate through the plastic of the bottles. One can sometimes find butyl or Viton o-rings which should not break down as much in acetone as compared to buna N. Do not try silicon materials as these breakdown and swell a great deal.

For my traveling kit, I store the acetone based glue and solvents in an empty powdered Gatorade container made from HDPE. The solvent fumes do not go through the HDPE and build up inside, slowing the evaporation through the individual glue bottles. I find that I still have most of the acetone left even after six months of storage in the HDPE container.

I hope this helps.
