Why wouldn't that be safe? As stated frequently, boron is non-toxic.
Mark, I've found that getting a nice, bead-free coat first requires a correct glue viscosity, regardless of the application method. Too thin and the solvent washes off the glue instead of applying it. Too thick and you get clumps.
I use the same risky method as Nicholas, using my finger to wipe as the boron comes out of the applicator.
I haven't seen any difference between wiping with acetone and not, but is easy enough to do so I figure it is worth the effort.
