Boron: Lighter than Aluminum, stronger and stiffer than steel, unaffected by humidity or temperature, consistent properties and even affordable in model quantities. A true godsend to indoor modelers.
When I got a spool early on from Curt Stevens, he emphasized its dangers. When I checked with local hazardous material people, they thought it was a crank call. "Boric acid is used for eyedrops".

Ignoring possible Sr Moments, seems like the problem involved one modeler snapping off excess Boron onto shag rug then walking barefoot onto said rug. If this is indeed the case it seems like a lame reason to ban such a neat material.
With simple precautions, like safety eyeware, well lit work surface and if necessary tape "flags" prior to trimming the ends, Boron should be one of the safer materials in the shop.
