I don't understand the fear some have of boron personally.
I have kids too, 7 and 8.
Put boron through Ray Harlan's glue cup with Ambroid, stick it to some masking tape, let it dry. Now it is easy to break to length. Un-useful small pieces get stuck to tape to toss. Others get put in an envelope. Vacuum after building. No worries.
You can also make conventional compression ribs with balsa verticals, also 0.025" squares, or maybe 20x25 thousandths, ribs cut to 0.025" height.
