I'm no expert by any means, but I cut the template from either 1/16 ply (vertical grained), or aluminum between .031 and .062. They are rough cut, then sanded or filed to the exact shape.

After the first cut, simply slide the template down the balsa blank using a 1/16 (or whatever) spacer, first at the 25 or 30% range, then at the TE, between the previous cut and the template.
