Playing the Thermals Game at Belgrade
This year's Indoor World Championships for F1D look to be more like an outdoor F1B event than an indoor event. The site, Belgrade Fair Hall 1, is a quite technically difficult site in which to fly. As Dennis Tyson so ably reported in his blog report on the 2010 World Championship and Dorcol Cup in Belgrade, "What makes this space so challenging is that all of the windows you see in the photos allow the sun to heat up the floor and basically create mini indoor thermals that are very difficult to predict." Additionally, as the thermal bubbles leave the floor, the surrounding cooler air is displaced which creates "dirty air" or turbulence at the ground level. This extends 8'-12'/2.5m-3.5m above the floor and a plane must successfully fly through this air both after launch and right before landing. These are the same flying conditions which present themselves to outdoor fliers such as those who fly F1B, another World Championship class.
