Hi Mike,
Yes, it doesn't hurt to ask.  I think the Uni-dome has real potential.  I never flown at Rantoul or knew that anyone flew there.
There have been many flying site in the Chicago area, here are the ones that come to mind. Currently, as you know there is Racine, Wi which is a nice Cat 2 site.  Also I believe there is a group flying at the old Forest View High School, in Arlingtion Heights, Il. That site is probably around 30 to 35 ft.
Many years ago we flew at the College of DuPage, it was an fair site and we got in for free and flew every Monday night from 6 to 10.   It had a ceiling height of about 30 ft.
I flew at a golf dome in Bensenville, Il.  We only flew there a couple of times, about 70ft ceiling and flew at midnight to 4 am.
I also flew once in a armory in Sycamore/DeKalb, Il.  I believe it was an Chicago Aeronuts contest. It think that ceiling height was 50ft or so.
Now I heard stories from the old timers about flying in the Chicago armory. I never flew there but it sound like a good site and fairly high ceiling.
I have flown at West Baden a couple of times, nice site but what I heard is that it is now a Casino/hotel, and the domed area is now filled with stuff.
As you know there is also the armory in Champaign, Il. Nice Cat 3 site.
I am sure there are others that I forgot and never knew about.

Cheers,

Kurt

Thanks, Kurt. I'll approach them and ask. It doesn't hurt.

Since you are in Chicagoland as well, what other regional sites exist besides the Urbana armory?
I've heard reference to Rantoul, but no idea where/when.
I'm pretty interested in trying out the ball room at the end of Navy Pier - That has to be Cat3. It is normally open on the weekends, people come in and gawk at the space. No fans I could detect, air seems still.
I heard that there was some sort of incident at West Baden - Maybe enough time has passed and that might also become available again?

Regards.

Â Â Â Â Â Â  I have flown there many times, the last time was 3 years ago.  It is a nice place to fly in especially for heavy gliders but the air is typically very turbulent.   Only once was the air calm and very nice.   Most of the times I was there blowers would go on and off.  When I asked if the blowers could be shut off I have been told no they can not.  If I recall originally the build was designed to have an inflatable roof.  Some years later the building was redesign with a self supporting roof.
