Thanks Sandy for that blast from the past. Since then I've built about a dozen and a half more. As in all indoor classes, each succeeding model of the same design you build will/should be better than the previous one. You'll learn how to build it stronger and lighter only if you spend time flying. I as most serious fliers have a log of all the weights and sizes of all the parts, as well as the Lbs./per. cu/ft. of the wood. Additionally, record deflection data on higher stress parts, i.e...wing spars, prop spars. I also write on the wood with a fine Rapidograph pen and note what model, and what part it was used for. This way when you want to build another plane you can just go to your wood supply and instantly pull out all the appropriate wood for your new model. Notice that this plane was to flexible. The motorstick twisted a lot, which gave too much wash in the wing, ( I don't even know about the wing spars),and the stab was playing Ornithopter.

BTW, here's an example of Tom's fine work taken at Lakehurst a while back. The vantage point on the carrier deck offered some good close-ups.
Unfortunately this and some other video of John K. flying HLS and F1D were stuck on a computer that went south but I recently retrieved the files and will try and post them soon.
