For those who don't know, helicopter duration has been a Science Olympiad event for two years now (and will be for another two), and to avoid boredom with the traditional co-ax designs, Matt Chalker and I threw in a 3 times bonus for Chinook designs like this to challenge the students. We weren't even sure it could be done.

Roy's Chinook was built to these rules, and the video was of him demo flying at the recent National SO tournament in Florida.

Well, as usual, the students surprised us. Not only did they figure out how to make these Chinooks work, they flew as well as the co-ax designs, winning time at the recent national tournament was 3:11, without the bonus!! It matched all but the best co-ax times!!

I'll let Roy describe his design, but the student's solutions were simple. Two motor sticks, two independant motors, normal PP style bearings. 2 and 3 bladed rotors, eliptical blades. sImple structures connecting the motors, the best had a vertical covering between thes sticks to aid stability. Their times came from careful matching of rubber and rotor.
