Jim,
The easiest way to learn to steer is to take a model you don't
necessarily want any more like an old EZB and get it up in the air and
just practice moving it around. Practice steering when it is climbing,
when it is cruising, when it is descending. This way you learn what you
can and can't do and how the model will react and your steering
equipment. If it breaks no big deal, you just learned what did not work,
fix it and do it again. This works with either a balloon or pole. With
a balloon start at lower altitude say 40 to 50 feet then go up from
there and make sure the balloon has enough gas to get good pull on the
line, a wimpy balloon will make steering difficult no matter how good
you are. This is essentially how I learned. We use to fly at CSU atrium
when I was a teen (about 90 feet high) and steering was needed as there
were potted plants, a candy stand, stairway case, etc that could cause
trouble. If you were up high you could drift into a hallway on one of
the upper floors so you kind of just learned to steer, with the ultimate
test being steering with a balloon while walking down steps. Once you
got that one down you were a real steering pro :-)
