That's what I've found, too. However, there are watchmaker dies for the other threads, and I saw reference to the "clearance hole size" for 00-90 being 3/64". I don't think you'd want to go too much small diameter-wise. The cross arm lands on the screw tip nicely with 00-90. I think a smaller diameter might be harder to make work properly.
I suspect that might mean that we could run some K&S 3/64" aluminum tubing through a M1.2-.25 watchmaker's die, for example, and make our own screws. That would be an interesting experiment.
