You can actually use just about anything that will keep the wire taut.
I used a couple of c-clamps to hold the wire to another clamp, then used the screw action outwards to make the wire taut. Use what you have on-hand, it will probably work just fine.
What does help is having good pliers. I still find making these a pain in the rear, so Ray Harlan has my business for a while yet.
