prop shaft corrosion

I find that after storing my models away for any length of time, the prop shafts will rust. We live on the coast and our salt air environment certainly accelerates corrosion. A nickel coated wire would help prevent this.
Does anyone know of a source of uncoiled nickel, or similar coated wire .010-.015 dia., or... are plated guitar stings an option? or are these too soft?
I suppose a light coat of petroleum jelly might be ok but potentially messy.
Any tips would be appreciated.
