Re: Phantom Flash Tissue Master
Most Phantom Flashes lack the incidence required for good, stable performance. I fly my outdoor PF to the left using a stock Peck 6", and despite the weight of a DT and the stock Peck, it flies over 2 minutes without much effort. I think it would do longer indoors. The wing is set pretty far back, mainly because of the extra incidence, resulting in a trim pattern similar to most of the old indoor designs of that era.
I also have an indoor-only PF. Weight is a little over 4 grams. I scraped the living daylights out of a Peck 6", per the FAC rules, and that gave me the CG desired. I added 1/16" incidence under the wing (in addition to what's shown on the plans) and added incidence to the stab as well (about -1 degree). The wing mounts are fixed, with the wing banding onto pegs drilled into the mounts. The wing is at a fairly normal location. I run it on a loop of .060-070 under a 30' ceiling and have to stay conservative on the power to stay out of the ceiling. Being flown to the right with built-in right wing washin and gobs of right rudder and right thrust, it flies just like a Hangar Rat--in VERY tight circles. It will fly in a standard living room. Anyway, times are about 2:15-2:20 no-touch under a 30' ceiling. Maybe I'll get a chance to test it at the next USIC to see if it'll do longer in higher ceilings.
Bottom line, most of the trim problems on the Phantom Flash boil down to insufficient incidence. If you don't use too much torque, it's a plane that will even fly happily to the right. A very good flier for the patient (or the stubborn, like me). Not a good beginner's airplane without mentors present.
