I think the Optivisor line is the best for relatively inexpensive magnifiers. I used to use a clip-on that had one or two lenses that swung down over one eye, but these are not great for modelling work. The Optivisor give stereo viewing.
Get a lens with no more than 2.75 X magnification. The Optivisor lens number is 7. It has a focal length of 6", which is good for not banging into delicate model parts while you are working with them.
For really close work, a 5X optical loupe is very good. Bausch and Lomb is the preferred brand. The inexpensive (~$9) are fine. They also make loupes with Hastings triplets which are much more expensive and not much better for our work.
