Guys
Here's the advance word on the Round Valley Dome contest.
It is FIRM for March 3-4, 2012. Probably 9-5 Saturday and 9-2 Sunday.
A lot of the details are still being ironed out (event list, etc.) Contact
CD Steve Riley if you have input to offer: Steveriley_at_cableone.net
There will be HLG and CLG, and FAC events/mass launches in addition to AMA
duration. Not sure if we're going to do apportioned launch windows a la
USIC. Might not have to depending on contestant count.
I took a good look inside this site back in 2006. It is a geodesic dome with
solid wood trusses which means there's little chance of hang-ups on the
primary structure. But there are speakers and lights and a few conduits
running between trusses which are hazards. It is definitely not a ceiling
banger's paradise and but it has lots of floor area and the air seemed very
stable. The host town is very small and friendly with decent motels around
$50-70 and beautiful scenery. Visit
http://www.springervilleaz.gov/index.html.
One of the negatives is the site is about 7000' feet MSL which means record
attempts would be pretty much out of the question. Also, this is cold area
of Arizona, not at all like Phoenix or Tucson in early March. Highs will be
in the fifties and lows in the twenties and thirties with snow pretty likely
that time of year.
Nearest airports are Albuquerque, Phoenix and Tucson, each about 3-1/2
hours' drive. Flagstaff is about 3 hours.

The dome is 400 feet in diameter and 104 feet high inside.
It's 200 to 220 feet between the lights.
This is the east side of the dome which is the entrance we will use. Large
parking lot right
next to the dome on this side. The main entrance is on the opposite side to
feed people into the bleachers.
This is from just inside the east entrance. As you can see the floor is
below ground level.
Here it is set up for track and field events. You could actually have two
football games
at the same time in here!
Here is a shot showing the large garage door partially open. It would easily
accommodate a Kenworth truck. From street level there is a ramp leading down
to the door.
