Some batches are better, but they are not up to the level of the best
Tan II. The big picture seems to me that around 2004 SS was good, then
the energy return dropped to be revised in the recent years.
In F1D Euros, the Czech team used SuperSport, to make flights over 30
mins. I suppose the lower energy return reduces the duration a little,
but then again, different energy return pattern (higher initial peak
then more consistent torque) could be used for benefit? In any case I
suppose the comparison between Tan and SS will flip over in a couple of
years, as F1B guys already report giving up using Tan as the motors fail
in an unpredictable manner. If your wound motor bursts while you are
waiting for the lift during the flyoff (only 10 min window for flight),
you are in trouble - better sacrifice a few percent of rubber energy
output in favor of being able to pick the best air to fly. I suppose we
will start seeing Tan motors burst in flight in indoor classes too, shortly.
I attach a picture of the energy returns of my F1B motor tests with the
stretch method.
