The other method is to stop the top prop by external means, without influencing the motorstick. If you hold a couple of sticks so they touch the top prop near the tips, you can prevent the prop from turning. However, because there is friction of the sticks against the prop spars, any movement by you up or down will change the weight seen by the scale.

I gave it some more thought this morning and have another idea that might not eliminate the movement problem. If you glue threads to each top prop tip (lower spar), you can hold them and stop the prop. If you hold them so they are horizontal, they won't put any vertical force on the prop, so the weight can be read pretty accurately by the scale. A simple rig might make it easier to get the threads horizontal. A couple of "stands" on the table either side of the model and a foot or more away could do it. The stands would be vertical sticks with notches in the ends. The bottom of the notches must be at the same height as the ends of the spar to which they are glued, when the model is as high as the tether permits. The sticks could be glued to heavy bases to keep them in place. Note that the strings could be pulled to change the angle, looking down, between the spar and the strings. The best angle would be 90 degrees, where the pulling force on the strings is the least because the torque from the rubber is acting on the strings with the largest moment arm, hence the lowest force. Having two people hold the strings may make it easier. Each needs to adjust how far each string is pulled to get the right angle and keep the motorstick vertical. You may have to lay the strings over the upper prop to keep them out of the way when flying with the top rotor free.

This all sounds simple and may be. How the thing works with a model trying to fly, and maybe gyrating around, remains to be seen. I hope you can try it and give a report on the changes in vertical force for the different conditions.
