The 5% difference between the best Tan II and best SS still has an
effect, especially as the SS has slightly higher initial peak and then
flatter cruise, so that ignoring the burst the difference is probably a
bit larger. On the other hand, for classes where there is no weight
limit for the rubber, the flatter torque curve may actually be a
benefit, if you use slightly thicker rubber to bring the average torque
up, and end up with a smaller variation in the flight torque, meaning
slower climb in the start and slower descent in the end of the flight.

For F1D I still use Tan II, but for less serious (national) classes I
mostly use SS these days. For one thing to save the precious Tan where
it is needed, but also as for the less serious competition I feel it
would be unfair for the guys who do not possess Tan.

In F1B, several guys have reported that the Tan rubber starts getting
brittle. It still has the good energy return, but it tends to break
abruptly, which is not so nice if it takes place e.g. during the flyoff
(where you only have a 10 minute window to wind the motor, pick the air
and start your flight). Many people say that they prefer to use SS, as
they can rely on the rubber holding together for the flight.
