I don't think there is a "proper" way, in that no way does a can prop resemble a helical one.
That said though, all the plans I've seen show the blade formed on a can at 15-17°, tilted leftwards, and then the spar is glued on parallel to the length of the blade. Then a good starting point is 45° of pitch at the 50% radius. If you've made tube hubs, you can twist in more or less depending on.....everything.
Since the efficiency of any prop is probably only in the single digits, they fly our models along happily, even if they aren't exactly on the button.
