I think this may have been the case back when "talking" involved actual spoken word, and the occasional telegraph (oh ok...phone call)

These days, however, the Internet and airlines erase a lot of geographical boundaries. "Long Distance phone call" is an antique term - a flying buddy is just a click away. And once you get your models and tools into an air travel mode, CA is the same distance as PA.

More than a few times recently I've met a new flier at a contest and mistakenly thought they were local to the venue we were in.

I interact with modelers in other states more frequently than I do with those in neighboring towns.
