You can lock the winder, this way you don't have to hold the crank. But if you
want to add a few more winds you don't have to unlock it. You simply wind
forward (no reverse allowed since this is a one way ratchet.) the extra winds
that you want and it remains locked. To remove winds you must unlock.

Sorry, my English is not the best. By 'they have no one-way ratchet' you mean
there is no break and you can unwind the lasts winds of the motor at will by
reversing the winding motion? Does this question have any sense or I'm
digressing?
