While browsing the net, I ran into the web site of "Specialty
materials", company that produces boron fibers, and there also found the
safety data sheet for boron fibers:

Looks like the stuff is not that bad after all; acute health risks are
"PUNCTURE OF THE SKIN BY FIBER SPLINTERS", but there are no known
chronic health hazards.
