Re: The demise of Indoor FF
Dear all
I decided to wait a week or so before posting my observations as I wanted to get a good perspective.
Anyhow... I have been flying indoor since the early 1980's which mainly focused on HLG & catapult classes, which then as it is now, is the `coolest' branch of our hobby (to coin the American phrase). I opted in 2005 to try F1D and have stayed with it and believe this to is also cool!.. why is it cool?.... it is an extreme form of modelling and to boot it gives me a big kick when I am flying them. Most of who I have flown with or against, I know get the same vibe
What is wrong with indoor per se?.... My observation and thoughts is that age is beating us. Kids out our local club turn up to watch and partake in indoor flying but have to mix with 80% retired men, this in a world of Playstation, Wii, and Chinese RTF models is somewhat difficult.
I am no age bigot, many of my closest friends are retired, indeed some have mentored me in F1D but to a kid age maybe not so cool!
There are unquestionably areas that could be spruced up, the BMFA Indoor Technical Committee which I am one of have been trying for years to try and encourage fresh fliers with little sucess. I believe it is just a sign of the times.
To summarise I believe that most of Indoor flying is cool and will remain so but it does not need negativity. We in the UK have been doing our damndest to try and spread the word and will continue to do so with a stiff upper lip!..
