Indeed, indoor FF IS intrinsically cool. On my lunch hour at the high school I currently teach at, I fly my penny plane and occasional EZB models in the school gym. Granted, the sight is horrible as there is a huge exhaust fan that never turns off (actually had an EZB get sucked into the fan from the drift...it was pretty funny) but the students who occasionally wander in from the cafeteria are amazed at my models flying circles for what they consider "forever." Granted, 3 minutes is very short, but the kids love it. Many have expressed interest in putting a plane together and have since incorporated the building and flying of a Novice Penny Plane (IMS Design)into the curriculum for my senior level physics class.

Long story short, exposure is the key. That can be difficult as those that fly in school gyms, do so after the kids are gone. With that said, I have yet to meet a child who doesn't think duration models are cool after seeing one fly. Even the most unmotivated students in my school got a kick out of the penny plane climbing to the girders.

Show off your models to the youth. Many will enjoy them, and a few will even pick up the hobby.
