I have used steel shafts, but my favorite is carbon fibre shafts from an archery supply.  They come in many diameters and I usually try for the smallest.  For tapered booms I use a steel one.  I have friends that use musical batons of various tapers.  I almost forgot, some people use glass rods.  They all work pretty good.  Ron Williams book on indoor flying is excellent as well as Lew Guitlow's.  Ron

Take a look here, 'bout as clear as can be. FWIW, I usually use steel
rods stripped from an old printer, nice smooth polished stuff.
