I've received a few offline messages, and it appears during that one year some SO fliers actually did ask if they could attend and were told "no, only the top two teams from each state are invited".

Based on that, I'd agree that the effort was misguided.

Carl's current effort doesn't suffer from that problem, so we should support it in any way we can.

I also agree that it will be a great day when the minidome is overrun by people (kids included) flying model airplanes.
