A sleeve can be as simple as a 1/4"-1/2" section of heatshrink tubing pushed up to the "O" ring. Use a diameter that will stay in place for most of the unwind.

I think I remember hearing about people using tissue tubes, but I have no experience with that.

Don't be tempted to use plastic straw pieces - they will slice right through the motor. I do have experience with *that*

9", as Mark said. Another problem you'll have if you stop at 24", besides not getting as many turns in as you otherwise could, is that you can get some blotchy groups of knots as you take the 24" wound motor and squish it into the 9" hooks.
