IN science Olympiad Debrief
Just got in from officiationg at the SO IN State Finals.
B Division Wright Stuff-
1st Thomas Jefferson MS- 2:57.7
2nd Wilbur Wright MS- 2:57.0
3rd Chesterton MS- 2:46.6
4th Benjamin Franklin- 2:15.6
5th Northridge MS- 1:58
Very tight competition for the top 3 places, 1st and 2nd seperated by only 7/10's of a second. The winning design was a "Super McGuffin" and 2nd place seemed to be Zeigler influenced. The rest seemed to be home grown. The highest airplane in flight was the McGuffin but flew maybe 50' high in a 62' ceiling. Those 1.5 gram motors sure reduced the descent portion of the flights. Many would dead-stick from 1/3 down from their cruise altitudes.I did not time any of the "top ten" teams this year as I was busy running the 2 Helicopter events.
Helicopter C Div
1st Bloomington HS South- 47.4
2nd Whiting HS- 12.8
3rd Valparaiso HS- 6.3
4th Canterbury HS- 3.9
5th Munster HS- 3.6
Helicopter B Div.
1st Thomas Jefferson MS- 33.9
2nd Northridge MS- 12.0
3rd Benjamin Franklin- 10.1
4th Chesterton- 9.6
5th Grimmer MS- 9.5
The Helicopters did show promise even though most fell short in performance. All the top flying teams in both events have made it to Nationals so the competition shall be fierce at U of I at the Champaign-Urbana Armory on May 22nd.
Regards, Tom Sanders, Nat. Supervisor
