Bill is correct. The 1/32” wire min/max is ancient history and will not be a part of the final rules proposal for A-6.

I think most everyone is missing the point about the prop shaft. The original A6 plan showed 1/32" wire in a 1/16" aluminum tube bearing. My guess is that these are items that Clarence thought everyone would have in their shop.

 

I'm not suggesting that this original idea should or should not be a part of the rules. It just seems like when people started flying A6's competitively the prop shaft and tube bearing were ignored. If the 1/32 shaft in a 1/16 tube is going to be ignored why have a rule about it at all? It doesn't make any sense to have a rule limiting the prop shaft size. Are we afraid someone is going to show up with a 1/16" prop shaft and beat everyone else?

Don De--, Maybe you missed it but I recall reading on this forum fairly recently someone saying that sometime in the past they had a conversation with Clarence Mather and that at that time he had stated that the the model mag. that published his proposal got it turned around--the 1/32 wire was a MAX , not a min, and one of the reasons was he thought that novices would have a hard time bending any larger a diameter wire. I have been lurking and waiting for someone else to correct the true intent. Stan

That was a typo…it was MINIMUM 1/32” wire which is obviously a major overkill

The key word being MAX. My .015 shaft will be no where near the Max of 1/32”.

The 1/32” max prop shaft diameter has been universally ignored for years.

 

For the current “A-6 Committee” rules look in the files section of Indoor_Construction .

Ren makes a good point: I'd vote but I don't even know what the present rules are or where to find them.


Van Dover published these in the Brainbuster Newsletter for the 2010 A-6 and Ministick Postal Contest.

A-6 Model Rules:
1. 30 sq inch max wing area
2. 1/32" max prop shaft diameter.
3. 6 inch max prop diameter. The blades are to be flat, no camber. Blades may be balsa or unlightened plastic. No foam. 1/32" thick or 1 mm.
4. 6 inch max motor stick length as measured from prop thrust bearing to rear hook. Tail boom length unlimited.
5. All strip wood construction to be a minimum of 1/16" x 1/16" square, or 1.5 x 1.5 mm where only metric sizes available. The strip wood may not be sanded to any shape other than a square.
6. All sheet wood construction, prop blades, wing and stab ribs are to be a minimum of 1/32" or 1 mm thick. Prop blade edges will not be rounded.
7. All wing and stab ribs will be 1/32" x 1/16" or 1.5 x 1.0 mm cross section.
8. Covering materials are limited to Jap tissue, Condenser or Gampi paper.
9. Only wood, wire, adhesives and allowed covering materials can be used for construction, with the exception of the prop shaft support and bearing, which may be wire, aluminum, or plastic. No special indoor materials may be used.
10. Rubber power only.
11. The use of metric size wood is restricted to those who normally cannot get other size wood.
12. The model must weigh a minimum of 1.2 grams.

I am planning on sticking to this for USIC 2010.
