I do not know if that is commonplace, but I also know that some people
from Romania anf Ukraine sell entire VP hub mechanisms, and I've never
heard anyone claiming that they are against the BOM rule. Which, I
think, they are, so it goes to show that the BOM is really a line drawn
on water....

I think it is more like a code of honor than a really enforceable rule.
How can you tell from any part, who has built it, if you do not provide
a video of the building process? Or, talking of VP hubs, if you would
ban the ready-made ones, can you then buy the parts as a kit and put it
together yourself? Etc... Just as in outdoor, there is no distinct place
to draw the line, between self-made and bought. For any definition there
is a gray area, where you cannot really tell if your action is within
the rules or not.

Therefore I only see two ways of action. One is the one that has been
taken in FAI outdoor FF: lift the rule altogether. That is ok for me, as
I do not like unforceable rules, and outdoor is so much more about
air-picking anyway. Or take the other route, keep the rule as a code of
honor, so that (even knowing that others may cheat and there is no way
of proving it), you yourself build your own models and be proud of it.
