Thanks for the "blipping" idea, too.  It appears to me that the tip gets glowing hot in a hurry, and takes a LONG time to cool off.  I suspect that it will cut the film for a long time after being turned off.  My cautery is only On-Off.  I was obviously too cheap.

Worst case, blip the cautery on and then let it cool down a bit. Not easy to get right, but it works in a pinch.
