I've made plenty of booms with the old form, and they all work well. However, the end is hard to get round (not that it seems to matter much) and if the tube has a significant curve, it tends to be at that last bit.

So, I'd be in favor of a little more diameter at the small end. I'm trying to get more weight aft anyway.
