Yes, works fairly well. I have used this one myself and also have taken it to middle school for use by the Science Olympiad students.
The cautery tip will still accumulate a little plastic and require occasional cleaning, but less so than the soldering iron. I think that this one came from Tim Goldstein. The late Dr. Hacker also used to provide some cauterizers at the USIC.

soldering iron, and it seems to collect some molten plastic on the tip.
Does a cauterizer work better, or will the hot wire be covered by the
