I use a mylar balloon that is 1meter in diameter. My fishing reel weighs about 625grammes and just rests on the ground when the balloon is inflated. This is the minimum lift I would use for a category 4 ceiling.

The length of the rod can be shorter for lower ceilings but requires still requires good judgment of the height of the model relative to the balloon.

Regards, Gerard.

I managed to find a local source for the 6mm foam rod for the steering
equipment. I reckon that the thinner one, although needs to be
reinforced, is lighter and has less air resistance, and is thus better
for the rod? The instructions say that the rod should be 10m (30ft)
long? Would a shorter one be better (at least for lower ceiling than 50
meters)? Also, does anyone have suggestions, how much lift the balloon
should have for good steering?

Thx,
