When I got my glass I priced 1/4" and 1/2". The 1/4" was about $13 and the 1/2" was about $50 so I went with 1/4".

I like using a large piece of plate glass that is 1/2 inch thick. It
is flat (within reason) and glue will not stick to it. I print out the
outline of the model and place it under the glass as a refrence. I
measure all my pieces prior to assembly so the print is for refrence
only.
