Don
I'm not saying your strategy can't work, but the airlines have pretty strict rules about what you can and can't get on the plane for the $15 charge. I think the requirement for any kind of special handling might kick you into the mega-charge range. I don't want to risk having that happen at the airport when I'm on my way to a contest.

The only thing I plan to put on my box is opening instructions so TSA doesn't take a jackhammer to it.

Bruce your statement is the core problem with checking models on commerical
  airlines.

After doing this for many years I am convinvced that the box must NOT look
like a steamer trunk or suitcase, because if it does it will be treated as
such. My boxes are all homeamde, out of 1/8" ply or 1/4" ply. They are
neatly varnished and trimmed with hardware and say DELICATE INSTRUMENTS and
TOP LOAD PLEASE. I've talked to a lot of gate agents and they rarely put my
boxes on the standard conveyors because they are home made and LOOK fragile.
Instead my boxes usually get hand carried to the ramp truck which drives
  them to the airplane.

I think the words DELICATE INSTRUMENTS are crucial. They make the baggage
handlers think "Geez, this must be a $10,000 telescope or something. I am
SCREWED if I damage it!" In contrast the words MODEL AIRPLANES seems trivial
  to the average baggage handler.

  Rgds
  Don

Aren't dents why you got the trunk?
