At Leo P's suggestion I looked into using a trunk for my Colorado trip.
I had a couple of kid's trunks in the attic but both were slightly
larger than what the airline says is okay and didn't look all that
sturdy. I've ordered a steel clad trunk from RoseTrunk.com. This will
hold two of my 15x22 plastic inner boxes (3 if I modify one)and my
small toolbox. I hope that the steel cladding will prevent punctures
like I got from UPS shipping 2 years ago. Checking it in on the flight
will cost $15 instead of the $100 that UPS shipping cost each way on my
last trip.
