in praise of glasss and nuts

In USA, any sizeable city will have a "Window and Door Company." Go
dumpster diving after they close, and on a good day you can find many
lengths, widths, and thicknesses of plate glass, or double pane glass
panels. I found a 15"x35" x 1" thick double pane once, which has
served for years. I use hardware store lug nuts for holddown weights.
Stacks of coins can work at times, but they slip around too much. The
lug nuts slip around some too, and it's too easy to carelessly drop one
on a spar.

Even better would be to veneer one side of my glass pane with 1/4"
outdoor balsa, to allow pins and/or lug nuts.

BTW, all glass is not perfectly flat, especially if its supporting
surface is not reasonably flat. Trivia: "They say" old church windows
can end up thicker at bottom than top after enough decades. So glass
is sort of a very slow moving liquid.
