Just to keep things in perspective I've seen Kagan fold the wing on his HLS and the model come down in a clump of balsa and mylar. Then an hour later it was back in the air pushing the world record. But I didn't know his miracles included repairing a wing in flight!

I would think that super stiff spars would break if deflected the way described.

  What sort of wood is needed for such wing spars? Dencity, stifness
