thanks guys for the help. I just typed in Bill gowen into Google search and the first image that came up was his glider. I know that right now i am making an outdoor catapult lanched glider. It is way to heavy compared to the look of that one of bills that i saw. She will be a floater if she is for outdoor though...
regards
Matthew

I flew built-up gliders with wings made from carbon rods for Cat 1 for several years. The plans for 2 of them are in INAV 102. My times went up when I switched to Slow Poker type all wood gliders.

If you want a really nice carbon tow for Cat 1 wood gliders try Mike Woodhouse. Look for this item under Hi Tech Materials:

0.0700 gms per metre (1,000 filaments per tow) infinite length

Here's his address:

This is a really smooth, lightweight tow. You can use it right off the spool for the lightest of gliders without having to split it. Rub a very thin coat of Duco or Ambroid into the wood, then stretch the tow on top of the wood and apply another coat of thin glue with your finger.

Another trick I've used recently is split carbon rods. If an .020 rod is too much and an .010 is too small you can split an .020 to a smaller size with a razor blade. It's very easy to do.

carbon tow. I have not really had much experience with it. I have been trying to find a picture of a really hi tech indoor catapult launched glider that looked like it was covered in ultrafilm or something? it had carbon going everywhere.. Does anyone know the model that i am talking about?

  Matt,

Are you asking about carbon tow or carbon sheet?  Carbon tow is supplied as loose fibers somewhat like yarn and you just clip off the length that you need and then split the tow into the widths that you want.
