Ben:
I think there is an active club in Pasadena, CA that flies indoor
regularly each month.
GOOGLE it and see what you find. The name of that club escapes me.
We have two clubs in San Diego (Scale Stoffel and Orbiteers) with
world class builders and flyers but San Diego might be a bit far for
you to drive from L.A., especially with today's gas prices. The San
Diego clubs pursue indoor free flight (including Science Olympiad,
Penny Plane, Peanut, Bostonian, Embryo, No-Cal) and outdoor free
flight (including Wakefield, P-30, FAC rubber scale).
I think there is also a club that does indoor free flight regularly
in the Inland Empire. GOOGLE that if you are interested.
There is no flying anymore in the Tustin blimp hangers in Orange
County. They only make expensive car commercial videos there now.
Moffett field up in the SF Bay Area also no longer allows indoor
model flying in its blimp hangers.
The best high ceiling site in the West where they still allow indoor
flying is the Kibbie Dome (approx 144 feet) in Moscow, Idaho, about
92 miles south of Spokane at the University of Idaho. They usually
have a fly there for a full week each July. It was just completed
for the 08 season. There is an expert modeler that picks up a lot of
the cost for the rental of the Kibbie Dome because entry fees are not
sufficient to cover the same. He is very generous but more attendance
is needed to keep the Kibbie Dome event going. They fly everything
there, including F1D. Someone recently posted the results for the
just completed Kibbie Dome competition. Scan down the message list
for the same.
It is great that you finally have the free time to build and fly
indoors. This hobby is very relaxing, relatively inexpensive (except
for travel) and full of wonderful people.
Good luck to you.
