I haven't completely broken the habit of using thickness but I think the
weight per unit length becomes especially important in events with fixed
rubber weights. When I'm competing in F1M for example I know pretty
close to the exact motor length that will give me the best times on a
particular day and particular site (determined in practice flights).
Then when I'm doing official flights I will usually have all the motors
that are close to that length arranged on my table by length.
