I find the odor of burning balsa a bit sweet, more pleasant than other
woods...

So, yes, I've set fire to a couple of prop blocks both in the
microwave and the oven. Even with the cup of water in the corner this
would happen.

The water is to absorb the energy of the microwaves. It used to be
relatively easy to burn out the heating element if there wasn't
something in the oven and a prop blade is almost nothing.

One thing to be careful about is to make sure that the glue used in
the form is well dried. I put a block that I thought was completely
dried (made out of two pieces of balsa with ambroid glueing them
together), and the heat generated vaporized the solvent in the glue
which lit up quite nicely. It was a bit funny to watch me try to put
out the fire without wetting the prop blade.
