I don't know if reversing is necessary but I start with a little over motor weight required, as I find having enough tails to pull the knots together helps keep them from slipping. I have used F1D motors that were tied and broke in several years before using them and have never had a knot undo and since they are tied lubed they seldom break at the knot, and I break lots of motors.
