Rochester contest: A bust

What if you held an indoor contest and (almost) no one showed up? We found
out here in Rochester on Sunday.

As things turned out, we had three veteran out-of-towners show up at the
Main Street Armory: Larry Loucka, Jack McGillivray, and Richard Miller. The
rest of the 11 contestants were from the Rochester area, and one of those
entered only to donate his $20 entry fee. Only one contestant flew CLG.
Other AMA events, such as Easy B, F1B, and Intermediate Stick had no
entries. Most of the FAC entries had barely the minimum three entries to
grant a kanone to the winner. So, in effect, the Empire State Indoor
Championships was scarcely more than a sparsely attended club contest. The
Western New York Free Flight Society will probably lose somewhere over $100.

Despite the presence of a surrounding wall used to mark an arena football
playing field, the site worked out well. The wall, about shoulder high,
proved to be a non-factor due to the virtually non-existent drift. We had
four Wright Stuff entries, one local, the other three from the Syracuse area
accompanied and coached by Marty Alderman. His trio of young ladies took all
three places. The winning flight was just under four minutes. They are
headed for the Science Olympiad nationals.
