I have flown small (1') kites on a spool of polyester thread with a dowel
forced through the center. Silk thread works well. Cotton becomes a bit
fuzzy. I use 1" strips of crepe paper for the tails. It comes in bright, highly
visible colors in 3" wide rolls. It is possible to find very find nylon
monofilament thread at the dress shop, about 4 pound test.
